V-Joint, Nickel-joint & End-matching

All Synergy Wood products feature tongue-and-groove joints, the preferred method for fitting boards securely edge to edge. This technique creates a flat, continuous surface while minimizing the effects of wood shrinkage. Often abbreviated as T&G, each board has a groove on one side and a tongue on the other, allowing the pieces to fit snugly together.
Our boards are also end-matched, which eliminates the need for extra joints, face nailing, or aligning joints with framing.

V-Joint

V-Joint: The term ‘V-Joint’ comes from the ‘V’ shape created when two of our T&G boards meet. This pattern is commonly used in wood ceiling applications and is available across our product range.

Nickel-Joint

The term ‘Nickel-Joint’ or ‘Nickel Gap’ comes from the old practice of using a nickel to space the boards—a width of about 1/8″. Our T&G profile features a square-edge with a precise 1/8″ gap, creating a seamless nickel gap. This pattern gives the appearance of shiplap but with a stronger joint, the ability to blind nail, and the added benefit of end-matching. Nickel-Joint offers a clean, modern look, often used on wood walls.

What is End Matching? Why is it Beneficial?

End-matching involves double end-trimming each plank, creating a tongue-and-groove on the ends. This forms a male and female connection, allowing the boards to interlock during installation and create a strong mechanical bond. End-matching eliminates cupping potential and accommodates wood expansion and contraction.

What Grade is Wood used in Synergy Wood Products?

We use #2 and C Southern Pine and SB Red Grandis

Red Grandis SB allows for some limited knots and small color variation

#2 Southern Pine allows for large knots and some color variation

C Southern Pine is mostly clear, occasional tight knot
